World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses like damage from PvE and crit chance.
If the template for upgrading a weapon is %, it will gain 3% of its previous attack damage each time it is upgraded.
Item upgrading costs crests and the current level of the item. The cost increases with item's level.
Components
Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, weapons and armor to provide them with a boost in stats or an extra effect. These can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components are only available to equipment that has a slot. The item must be upgraded to a blue level before the component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied only once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.
An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix, modifying the name of the equipment to which it is applied (for instancefor example "Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). A boost upgrade is a way to modify the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them in the cash shop or obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other gear.
The player is able to have up to five boost upgrades at one time. Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a better-quality version of the item will be available at the time of the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep improving their equipment, even if they're unsure of the extent to which it will improve following a subsequent reset.
The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process may be costly and there is a significant possibility that the item will become obsolete or even break if it fails; a failure to upgrade can cause the destruction of Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items that can double or even eliminate chance of failure, as well as a few upgrades that give a bonus when reinserted into an item.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to improve the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets that are specifically designed for. Each Glyph has a particular range of values it can improve a stat by. The value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with an Glyph that is the same or higher rank to increase the value of the Glyph.
You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of an Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain unlimited-use gathering tools, and through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are some rare glyphs which you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.
Once you have gotten the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your gear. Once enough points are earned you'll be eligible to claim the upgrade and receive its additional bonuses.
When a player upgrades an item it is replaced by a new item of the same type. The same armor will receive an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also has its own set bonus. This can be a downside in that the item could increase in price even if you don't need it.
Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled, provided that the player has enough tokens to do so. The item will be replaced with an entirely new item that is based on a level 1 base and totally different bonuses. This can be useful but it should not be repeated often since it could waste resources.
Some upgrades can be rerolled multiple times to increase their value, giving players the ability to alter their equipment. An excellent example is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player is repeatedly in and out of the water (or swims like dolphins). It can be upgraded multiple times, each time raising the maximum roll by an increment of 10. This item is very valuable in PvP. A perfectly rolled version can be worth as much as 50x the value of its non-upgraded version.
Requirements
The upgrader for items allows players to raise the level of their equippable equipment (armor weapons, armor trinkets, and armor) above ilvl385 by presenting the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades to armor set pieces also increase its base defense, while upgrades to weapon items boost their base damage as well as their strength and dexterity.
Each item can be upgraded up to five times, with the exception for hero gear, which can be upgraded eight times. Each time you upgrade a piece of equipment, it is at risk of failing. The probability of failure increases when you exceed the maximum number. The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to its value.
